While announcing another slate of milestones of member companies and conformant products, ONVIF officials discussed their focus on education during a public networking breakfast Tuesday morning at ASIS.
In a presentation, Jonas Andersson, chairman of ONVIF's steering committee, announced that the organization now has more than 330 members companies and 1,000 conformant products.
Andersson also said he expects the access control specification to be completed sometime early next year.
"We've put a lot of technical work in ONVIF, including specifications and ensuring interoperability," Andersson said. "What we need to know is reach out to specifiers, architects and consultants to make sure they know about the standard and how they can use it in projects."
And to further that goal, ONVIF recently started an outreach group with its first event at ASIS.
"It will be training about ONVIF," he said. "We're also doing this to get outreach from specifiers regarding what is good and bad about the specification and how we can make it better. I think this is important to get the products used. There are more than 1,000 products used. The market needs to know that they can use these products."
Steve Surfaro, industry liaison with Axis Communications, said that ASIS was a smart choice place to start outreach efforts.
"It's no accident that we started this at ASIS," he said. "ASIS has a very strong group of what we call practitoners that include specifiers and designers. That group of individuals have been very supportive. We're also reaching out to other leadership and other standards organizations."
Andersson said it continues to be up to the marketplace regarding where the specification goes.
"We've done a lot of work," he said. "It's up to the marketplace to get engaged in our work and the future. It's up to our members to decide on the future."
